Darren Aronofsky is one of the more interesting directors, the big-uns being Pi; Requiem for a Dream; The Fountain and now The Wrestler.
The movie stars Mickey Rourke as an old wrestler whose hayday was long past, 20 years past. Our intrepid band of viewers, S2H, Dusty Rhodes, Eddie the (billy) Goat, Grizzly Adams and me (SmackDaddy was poorly) enjoyed this (AFAIK). It's far more linear (S2H) than other Aronofsky movies, but the character development is wonderful. Rourke is in pretty much every scene, and carries the movie beautifully. His is an engaging character exploring loves, a lost (ish) daughter, other wrestlers - working the small time circuits, and his legacy. The critics have loved this, leading to Rourke getting the nod for Best Actor at the Oscars and Tomei for Actress in a supporting role. Both thoroughly deserved. Rourke has been cleaning up at a number of award ceremonies, and you can see why.
Very recommended, sure it's a bit graphic in places, but it's also very engaging.

Unexpected gifts

A car stopped next to me. A long haired, lanky, hippie-ish fella poked his head out and said: here, have this.
So big ups to Billy for his gift of a compact cassette (link provided for younger readers).
Various Artists : The Wrestling Album II : Piledriver.
This is scary, it includes vocal performances by many of the artists, apparently there was even an 8 track video tape of this pinnacle of musical talent.
I was, and still am, speechless. I also need to find a tape player so this can be mp3'd for all to enjoy. In the meantime, the cover (Village Person Hulk Hogan) and a couple of the video's (thanks YouTube - although you lot may not agree, check out the intro of the first one, in particuarly the pronunciation of Tchaikovsky, but Mean Gene can rap, kinda; here's a link to 6 of the videos)
But more worrying is Vince McMahon and 'Stand Back', but it's amusing to play spot the wrestler...who knew Jake was a sax player eh?
I think that's enough for tonight.

Wrestling - somewhat delayed
yeah I know I said I'd post some pictures of Dr Diablo rocking out the fat moves for his PhD in Pain. But y'know, I got distracted ... anyway Martin and I had a fun night, it's cheap, fun, sadly sober and good way to spend a few hours.
Firstup: The Setup

I used to have a chest:

Wondering if the mask has padding:

Rockin.

The good Doctor was tag-teaming and sadly had his ass whupped. Oh well, the audience enjoyed it !
I took a few pictures as MacDaddy and Scotty2Hotty were unable to make it.

Reptiles, the Wahine, and anything else I can think of
Heh I forgot daylight saving ended this morning, but as a plus it means I've been incredibly productive and it's only 1045am.
I watched the first two episodes of the David Attenborough/BBC doco series 'Life in Cold Blood' - all about reptiles. It's like reptile p0rn. Actually it is reptile p0rn, and amphibian p0rn, it's herp heaven! Readers of the blog may remember the golden frog that waved? Well that's in the second episode - it's sooooo cute. And the chameleon's? Awwww I want one!!! Sorry, need to find tissues now...
The Wahine disaster has been dominating the DomPost recently. Or rather the 40th anniversary of the sinking. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm bored to death with it. I can't see how it was a defining moment in the development of NZ as a nation (as can be argued for Chanuk Bair). Am I missing something here? And really, is 40 years a good number to celebrate? I have my doubts about CBair too, it seems to be celebrated for introducing the world to the taciturn emo stunted NZ bloke. Choice.
oh well, I have wrestling to watch this afternoon which promises to be excellent (Wrestlemania 24). The lads, the beer, the cheese, the grapes, the men-in-tights man-handling each other!
me xx

KPW Helloween Hell II
Martin and I wandered along after some QI and Boss Nigger to the KPW 'Helloween Hell II' as we'd enjoyed the previous KPW event. Obviously there for the legend that is Dr Diablo, we managed to sit through the matches before the herculean man muscle of Diablo cantered to the stage. We were awestruck!!
Is that man on the juice? Surely not!
A glorious victory ensued, the second in his amazing career. Surely he's in line for a title shot? We must start a fan club - Lil' Diablos?
Some action shots of the big man in action, locking in the leglock and inflicting the pain - he's got a PhD in it ya know.

Big calls by the big Blair too - possibly our favourite "I'm in Newtown and a fights broken out!"

Diablo-rific!
We've been supporting the good Dr for some time now, he's got a PhD in pain don't ya know!! His win/loss record has not been good, in fact we've never seen the former but plenty of the latter.
But last night, at the KPW aussie invasion, the big guy came through. And Team Diablo in all its 6-fold glory was there. Never before in the illustrious luchadore history has so much been achieved in the face of such huge odds! The ref, the opposition, the physique - all overcome by DrD. And we were there! Oh we cried, we hugged, we were overcome.
I've included a picture of DrD from his early days - we have pics of his first match somewhere that may make their way on here...for more on KPW click here.
Great times. And the ballet tonight.
