today I learnt that Pope John Paul II practised self-flagellation, and is well on the way to sainthood.

Yeah, but then we'd have think about what that implied.
I think you're doing it wrong.
It's only celibate flagellates that get made saints, so there's obviously something you're not telling us ;)
